Beautiful hanging file folders
And yes, that does make it even more special! So fun! I'm sorry if I missed this in the post, but what do you do with the artwork that is commonly bigger than a standard piece of paper? So far I'm thinking they can go underneath all the files, flat on the bottom If artwork is bigger than the standard size, I usually either fold it in half or in fourths and still put it in the folder, or if it's too big to do that I usually just get rid of it.
My son had to make a Star Student poster when he was in Kindergarten and it was on poster board which was obviously too big to fold for the folder and I couldn't bear to get rid of that, so I just rolled it up and it's sitting in his closet.
Laying it on the bottom under the other files is genius, though! I've ordered from your links and I'll be ready to tackle some organizing. The current method is not working haha. This is amazing and I'm in the process of ordering everything right now! Did you go with the medium tote or the large tote? I'm having a hard time deciding Love this idea! I want to homeschool my children so unfortunately I will not be able to have their teachers all sign something for them great idea!
I wish it had been done for me but it will give us a way to organize all that we do want to save over the years. Not to mention that they will be able to compare boxes with their own children one day.
Thank you for taking the time to write about this, I am sure your children will deeply appreciate this when they are grown. I know, I wish that had been done for me, too!
And hats off to your for homeschooling! I don't think I have the patience for it. My son is starting Kindergarten and my daughter preschool in September. This is absolutely amazing and I'm so grateful to have found this post! I have a question. What do you do with oversized things? My mom saved mine folded and I hated that they got ruined by folds.
Hi Katelynn, so far I've only had to deal with a few oversized things. A couple of them weren't super special so I just tossed them, and then the rest I folded. Hopefully my babies won't be upset one day that I folded them. For that, I just rolled it up and put it in his keepsake box for stuff other than paper - for books, toys, and those kinds of keepsakes.
Eventually I plan to do a post about that box as well, and eventually I will tie them all together and share all of the keepsake boxes that I have for each child. Thank you so much for sharing! I am an organizational nut my self!! I have some what of a system but like this one much better. I know what I will be working on this weekend! I'm glad you like it! I hope you find that this system works for you!
I just love that we will end up with one small time capsule of their entire school career in one box. I don't want ten boxes of old school stuff lying around! Thanks for the great organizational idea. I want to do this for my daughter, I have boxes and boxes in our garage.
One question though what do you suggest doing for all of the art projects that are not on paper, that take up a lot of space. Thank you for reading! As far as all of the big projects go, we saved a couple of our favorites and they are displayed in the kids' rooms on their bookshelves.
The rest of them get photographed and then trashed! My daughter is starting 3rd grade and the previous years' schoolwork have been boxed up Massive paper pile-up! I've weeded through ALL the papers and now on to filing! I'm so glad this was helpful for you!
Thank you so much for stopping by AND taking the time to comment! Hi there! I am so glad that I found this post! Can you please tell me what format you used to type out the labels for the hanging file folder tabs? Hi Mandy, welcome! To type the tabs I just typed them in a Word document and used a paper cutter to cut them down to size. I just skipped three lines in between each label and printed them like that. Then I cut them down to size.
It took a little bit of playing around to get it right, but once I got it, it was easy to do the rest! I know that's probably not super helpful so I apologize!
As I did this, in a different way, for my children, at the end of each school year I had the collection spiral bound with vinyl covers.
I included blank pages where I could later attach a particular item using glue of tape as appropriate. I also included a pocket page as need for other items to be placed after binding.
Roll or lay out your material design side down on the table. Place your file folder on top of it. Trace the outside of the file folder onto the material. Once you've drawn the whole area you are going to cover, cut around the outline you made. This will give you a more firm area to cut around and will ensure that it is precise. Just cut around the visible edge and cut off the bottom once it is no longer visible from the outside.
Glue the materials. You need to use a glue stick, super glue, or other thin adhesive so the material won't stick up from the file folder. Focusing on the area you want to cover on the file folder, gently apply a thin, generous coat of glue to the surface of the file folder. Before the glue has time to dry, adhere your material to the folder, making sure to line up the edges.
Gently press down on the surface of the material, making sure each area sticks to the file folder underneath. If you use fabric to cover your folders, make sure you use a type of adhesive that won't bleed through the fabric and that will hold the fabric onto the folder, such as a spray adhesive, instead of super glue.
Contact paper is also great for covering the entire folder, so try covering the whole folder in the contact paper of your choice. Not only does this give your folder a new look, it also makes it more durable and waterproof. Add decorative elements. Once the glue has dried on your file folder, add your decorative elements.
There is no one way to add decorations to your folders, so just have fun and make them as festive as the situation allows. You can add stickers or decorative tape to the front of the folder. Try crisscrossing tape to make designs or using the tape as the backing to your labels. You can glue cut outs along the folder to add more designs to your material. You can also add objects such as buttons or bows to the cover to add extra flare.
This adds decoration without adding additional bulk or elements that might fall off with extended use. What you can do is get some felts and just draw patterns. Sometimes folders at shops are made to look hand-made, it's cute and easy. Not Helpful 14 Helpful Just fold it into half, punch two holes on the folded side and tie a tag to it. Not Helpful 15 Helpful It will be quite hard. Paper bags aren't very strong for a cover and may tear quickly. Not Helpful 27 Helpful You can try, but regular cardboard is very thick and will be difficult to bend.
Not Helpful 33 Helpful Yes, but the paper may tear easier than cardboard. You should try to use thicker paper to avoid tearing.
