Though The Clipse and The Neptunes have been conspicuously absent from the scene due to some recent label turmoil, don't count Virginia out. Industry newcomer Doujah Raze is making waves around the Old Dominion state, rocking stages and amassing hype by way of a pair of mix tapes released as a teaser to his self-titled debut.

Now, with the main course served, it's clear what all the hype was about. From the very first snare clap, Doujah Raze demands attention with a commanding presence - an element lacking all too often in underground emcees. Doujah's gamut of producers - including Da Beatminerz, Shuko, and Disko Dave - helps him incorporate his love for that early 90's vibe.

The backdrops succeed in channeling the old boom bap style of Pete Rock and DJ Premier, splicing it with modern techniques for an updated take on the classic sound.

With one ear trained on yesteryear and the other looking to push into the future, Doujah Raze has all the right ingredients.
